Garmin Forerunner 305

Treadmill
These are my two favourite pieces of running technology. The top photo is my Garmin Forerunner 305. It's a running watch/GPS/heart rate monitor. I love it, because it gives me the freedom to go out and just run wherever I want, and not worry about having a distance pre-measured out. It uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to measure distance and pace/speed. The 305 also includes a heart rate monitor, so I can tell how hard I'm working, and it also measures time. So it is a great training tool. I can just go out and run anywhere, and it tells me how far I've run, my pace/speed, my heart rate, and how long I've been running. At the end, it gives me my average pace/speed, the number of calories I've burned, and my average heart rate. I can also set it to give me "splits" every so often (every mile or every kilometre for instance) and it will tell me my time, average pace, and average heart rate for that split. I love mine.

The second photo is, of course, a treadmill. We have our treadmill in our living room, in front of the TV, so that we can run on it for hours and not be bored. I love running outside, but sometimes it just isn't safe to do so - usually when it is very icy out in the winter or very cold. I will run outside in temperatures down to -20°C if there's not much wind, but when there's a biting wind, or when there's ice on the roads and running paths, it's just not safe to run outside, and so I prefer to run on the treadmill. Also, in the summer, when the temperature climbs to above +30°C, it also isn't safe to run outside. Or when the temperature isn't quite that hot, but it's very humid, you also run the risk of dehydration and heat stroke. So running inside, where it's air-conditioned, is much safer. The longest run I've ever done on the treadmill is 18 miles. I've also run several 15, 14, 13 and 12 milers on the treadmill, as well as many many shorter runs, too numerous to count. With a couple of good movies on, and a partner to change the DVD when required and to supply you with fresh Gatorade, it is quite do-able. I do prefer to run outside, whenever possible, but when the weather is uncooperative, the treadmill is a great piece of technology.

Both of these pieces of technology help me to stay on schedule, when training for a marathon, half-marathon, or a shorter race, or when I'm just running for fitness. When following a training program, they help to ensure I'm running the correct distance at the right effort, for that day of the program.

He, he a treadmill for watching TV, that would be something for Mr. Gattino ! He hates walking (not to speak about running) but should ! Now if I buy that thing you will read in the newspaper "husband killed wife because of a treadmill !

That is just too much running! Makes my knees ache! I prefer walking! But both are great pieces of technology. I have a treadmill too but only for walking!

Will the Garmin help you find your way home? Seriously. I know they have great systems for cars, do their running watches do the same?

Yep, that's techno alright! Seem to be very useful anyway. Cool watch indeed, I can understand that you love it.

I wish I were able to run like that. No way with my back though. Just to accept that fact.

Well, there is other ways to exercise luckily enough. Making love is my favorite, one of the better ones ;-)

I love your Garmin. I didn't realize that is out there. I love to run, but I always get shints. So I had to come up with another way of exercising. I would have loved to have a gadget like your Garmin. Thanks for sharing and for stopping by.

Have a great weekend, Betty :)

Honestly - I seriously considered taking a photo of my treadmill, too - but the problem is that my cat uses it more than I do right now. Blessings ~ Patricia

I'm jealous of your garmin!

We just got an elliptical exercise machine and it helps pass the time if I'm watching TV while I work on it.

That's an impressive watch.

That's cool! A treadmill at home would be good on cold days like today. :) I like it cause you can start of slow and then increase the speed gradually.

Thanks for stopping by.

These are terrific. Love that GPS gadget you can wear on your wrist. Very helpful.

I can't use a treadmill - gives me motion sickness when I get off. :-(

Perfect choice for the Hunt.

I hate exercise machines. I have been in fitness testing for the last week at school.

I have yet to get a treadmill but would kind of like one, however, like you I prefer to run outside.

I have a heart rate monitor but not as fancy as yours and I don't use it anymore, though I should probably start again.

My daughter and I just went for a 58 minute run today which is good for me because I've been slacking off lately.

I hadn't run since December 15 when I started again this week but I managed to run 6 days in a row now. Woot!

I'm taking tomorrow off though and back at it Monday.

I wonder how the watch measures distance? It's really awesome.

I guess the watch can come in really handy if you are running in a not so well know area to you :).
18 miles on the treadmill - wow...How cool is that...
I hope you are having a great weekend.

Thank you for the note, Caylynn . . . the watch is now on my wishlist!

I applaud your dedication to fitness -- alas, I love technology as long as I can sit and type but that's about it!
