Thursday Thirteen

#19 - 13 Places we Plan on Visiting While We're Posted to Germany

My husband is an engineering officer in the Canadian Forces, and he's currently working as an exchange/liaison officer with the German military engineers. Sadly, Canada doesn't have any bases in Germany any longer, so the only army postings here are either exchange postings or NATO positions. Since my husband is in an exchange/liaison position, we know we'll only be in Munich until the summer of 2009. Between now and then, here are some places we plan on visiting.
  1. Egypt - Ancient Egyptian history fascinates me. We plan on taking a trip to Egypt next fall, starting in Cairo, taking a cruise down the Nile to Abu Simbel. I can't wait to see the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, the Temples at Karnak and Luxor, and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo with the treasures from King Tut's tomb.

  2. Rome - The history of the Roman Empire also fascinates me. I'm looking forward to visiting Rome and seeing the great Coliseum and many of the other historical sites. There is so much history and culture in Rome that I am looking forward to experiencing.

  3. Mainau Island - This is an Island in the Bodensee, which is a large lake between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Due to the island's geography and the weather conditions, it has an almost tropical climate, with many tropical plants growing here. The island is a park and flower garden, and motorized vehicles are not permitted on the island. I'm looking forward to visiting and seeing the natural beauty of this island.

  4. Berlin - It goes without saying that while we are living in Germany we must visit Berlin, the capital of Germany. Must-see and must-visit locations in Berlin include the Brandenburger Tor, Berliner Dom, the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, and many others.

  5. Great Britain - We're not sure exactly where in Great Britain we will visit, but we will definitely travel there at some point. There is just so much to see, and so many potential places to visit, that we haven't decided exactly what we want to see yet.

  6. Greece - Another country rich in history. We would like to take a cruise of the Greek Islands, and also visit Athens. The Acropolis of Athens would be an amazing site to see.

  7. Herrenchiemsee - A castle here in Bavaria, built by King Ludwig II. It was modelled after Versailles, as Ludwig II was a great admirer of King Louis XIV of France. This castle was built on an island, which also features a park and waterworks.

  8. Versailles - Speaking of Versailles, I also want to visit the real Versailles. Both the castle and the park look like amazing places to visit. Versailles is rich in history, with so much to see and learn.

  9. The Louvre - When we were in Paris in October, we had a chance to visit a great deal of the city, but we didn't have enough time to really visit the Louvre. I want to take the time to visit a good portion of the museum, and see many of the great works of art housed here.

  10. Château d'Oex, Switzerland - We will be spending a week here in February, at a chalet. Famous for it's hot-air balloons, there are also many other activities, such as horseback riding. Neither my husband nor I ski, but there will be plenty to keep us busy during our week's vacation.

  11. Vienna - We will be visiting Vienna at the end of April, when we will be in the city to run the Vienna Marathon. We also plan on visiting the famous Spanish Riding School and seeing the Lippizaner Stallions.

  12. Salzburg - Another city in Austria that is rich in history and culture. Places to visit include Mozart's birthplace and residence, Salzburg's Cathedral, St. Peter's Abbey, and a number of museums and art galleries.

  13. Dachau - This memorial site is not far from Munich. As an army officer, my husband visited the concentration camp memorial at Auschwitz when he was in Poland, and it was a moving and disturbing experience. This will not be a pleasant trip, but is something that we want to do. It is important that we not forget, and that we pay tribute to the memory of those who were interred in these camps.

Thanks for visiting my list! Hopefully I will remember again next week, hehe!

You guys have got loads of places to visit, but I would put Great Britain at #1!! It's not too bad here, if a little too crowded at times. But you can always find a green hill somewhere and enjoy the solitude. Mmm!

That's quite a list and I'm with you on all of them, already did some. The Netherlands is not that far away and it has wonderful places to visit too!
Thanks for visiting my TT!

Wow, such a fabulous list, and I, too, am with you on all of them! And thanks for visiting my TT -- Dragonheart sounds purr-ecious! :)

It is difficult to visit the camps but I think it is something every conscienscious person must do when visiting Germany. I always have an amazing time in Berlin and Rome! Enjoy all :)

Great list - I've been to Mainau and Dachau and recommend both, for totally different reasons, obviously.

*sigh* I've lived in Germany for 12.5 years. I've been to Rome (just this summer), and I've been to Dachau, but that was when I was here on Reforger, not when I lived here. We walked past the Louvre wihtout realizing what it was when we were in Paris 20 years ago, does that count?

I have, however, been to at least 13 castles (the subject of my TT this week).

I was born in Germany (army brat) and would love to visit there one day! You have picked out some really cool places to visit! Hope to see pictures of your trips!

Egypt is on our to do list when it comes to travel as well. We're hoping to make it there in the next few years. Versaille and the Louvre are amazing and you'll really enjoy Rome.

I've been to England, Scotland, France, and Italy.. but I've always wanted to visit Egypt.
Hope to hear about your trips!

Wow! You have an ambitious travel agenda planned.

My brother and I hope to visit Germany in 2008. He has held a fascination with Germany since he was a little boy. He is interested in history and especially
war history. So, your Thursday Thirteen was particularly meaningful.

Oh, all these travel 13's are making me realize how much I miss traveling! I went all over Europe when I was kid, and we even ducked down to Greece and over to Jerusalem while we were at it one year. I definitely have to get out and about more. Sigh.

Ohhh, so many places in the world I want to visit! Of all the places you mentioned here, I've only been to two--Egypt (briefly) and Rome(even more briefly--I was at the Leonardo da Vinci airport for about an hour in 1967)!

Take advantage of your travel opportunities! You'll never regret it.

I would so love to go to the places you've listed here. The only place that I've gone to visit was England. There is so much to do in London alone, you'll never see everything. I did the Jack the Ripper walking tour the first night I was there. Only cost me 5 pounds and I got a tour of London at night. Was the best thing I did.

Oooh! Rome! I'm very jealous. I'd really love to get to Rome, and Florence as well.

Have a great time during your stay in Germany!

My younger brother who was in the US Army was stationed in Germany for 2 1/2 years. There were many places that he visited while there. I believe some of them are on your list.

Happy TT & thanks for stopping by. I've linked you by the way.

Those are wonderful places to visit! Hubby & I are both fascinated (overly so) with Egypt & it's history. We probably read all the books in the city library about it, browsed the websites devoted to it,and went to the Royal Ontario Museum in 2004 when they had "Eternal Egypt" exhibit of Masterpieces of Ancient Art from the British Museum. We simply had to go to Egypt someday and see the places we read about so much!

Wonderful list - have fun while visiting! I have been to Egypt a few years ago on a great diving-trip. Rome is priceless, I discovered it mostly by feet *ouch*. The German places you´ve mentioned are the most beautiful and interesting places this country offers. If you come via Düsseldorf or Cologne, please drop me a line. I´d like to invite you, your hubby and Dragonheart if he travels with you =)
Herrenchiemsee is gorgeous. If you like fish you have to try one of those fumed specialities they offer.
Enjoy your visit in Paris. We´ve been there (again) last November. It´s so gorgeous.
I´m sure you will love the Spanish Riding school in Vienna as much or even more than I do. The places in Switzerland and Austria are a good choice as well. If you have enough time to make it you should give Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna a chance as well. Yummy "Apfelstrudel" =)
We´ve spent our last summer holidays in Corfu, Greece and I fell head over feet in love with this little beauty.
Did I forget... oh, yes: GB! I have been there often, because a (former) friend of mine lived there - an army wife as well. So I´ve been to many places. Nice - too bad we´ve lost the contact a few months ago.

Whatever you do, I´m sure it will be a great trip =)

Phew, that´s a looooong comment!

Ganz liebe Grüsse,

Sanni

P.S.: Ich würde mich sehr freuen, Euch persönlich zu treffen =)

Wow, what a list! You will certainly have some wonderful memories from visiting all those wonderful places.

I have only been outside the US once. I was in Toronto for about 5 days in 2004. I LOVED that city!

Thanks for stopping by my TT.

I would add Russia and some of the lower slavic countries only because I am doing extensive research for my next WIP.

Absolutely awesome that y'all are taking advantage of being over there to see much of Europe.

I had a dear high school buddy who joined the U.S. Air Force and stationed in Germany. He and his wife did the same thing you are, seeing all of the things in Europe that they always wanted to see.

Wanted to leave a comment yesterday when I first stopped by but blogger wouldn't load the screen. And then I had problems loading any blogger blog. In any case, I thought this was a great list! Greece and Egypt are my top 2 places I want to visit in the very near future. Hope you make it to every one of these destinations.

Hope you had a good Thursday!

Rome and Greece are also on my list as I've never been there.

Thank you for planning to visit Dachau. You're right ~ we must honour there memory.
